Alanya Dim River and Dim Cave Travel Guide: A Cool Escape on Hot Summer Days
Alanya Dim River and Dim Cave travel guide: how to get there, best time to visit, riverside restaurants, tips for cooling off and planning your perfect day.

Why is the Dim River in Alanya so popular?
In July and August, the coast of Alanya can get extremely hot and humid. On days like these, one of the first places locals and tourists alike think of is the Dim River (Dim Çayı). Rising in the Taurus Mountains and flowing into the Mediterranean, the river runs through a green valley east of the city center, about a half-hour drive away. Even in midsummer its water is surprisingly cold, and the valley feels noticeably cooler than the beach.
What makes the Dim River special is that you can dine on wooden platforms built right over the water or along its banks and dip your feet in the river while you eat. A few hours in the shade of the trees, with the sound of rushing water in the background, offers a different kind of relaxation from a beach day. Combine it with the nearby Dim Cave and you have an enjoyable half-day or full-day trip that brings together nature, cool air and local food. In this guide, you'll find everything you need to know to make the most of the Dim River and Dim Cave, from getting there to the best timing.
How to get to the Dim River
The stretch of the Dim River lined with restaurants is about 10 to 15 kilometers east of Alanya center. Turn off the coastal road toward Kestel and head into the valley, and signs along the way will guide you to the riverside venues. Depending on traffic, the drive usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.
A rental car or taxi is the most comfortable option. If you also want to see Dim Cave on the same day, having your own car gives you more flexibility. During the summer season, dolmuş minibuses also run from Alanya center toward the Dim River, but since routes and frequency can change with the season, we recommend checking the latest information with your hotel reception or at local stops.
If you'd rather not deal with public transport, the easiest option is an organized jeep safari or nature tour with hotel pickup and drop-off. Many of these tours stop for lunch at the Dim River and add nearby villages and viewpoints to the route.
When is the best time to visit the Dim River?
The Dim River is at its liveliest from late May to late September. During these months most restaurants operate at full capacity, the platforms over the river are set up, and the valley fills with local visitors on weekends. In June, July and August, it's a true refuge from the heat on the coast.
If you don't like crowds, go on a weekday and arrive before lunchtime. On weekends, especially Sundays, families flock to the valley for picnics and meals, making it harder to find parking or grab a table close to the water.
In spring, in April and early May, the valley is lush and green and the water level is usually higher. The scenery is beautiful, but the water can be very cold for swimming. From October onward, some businesses close or take down their platforms. If you're visiting off-season, it's a good idea to check in advance which places are open.
Riverside dining: What to expect
The signature Dim River experience is eating in pavilions built right above the water, either sitting cross-legged or at low tables. Many venues have platforms laid with floor cushions and rugs, and at some spots the river flows right under your table so you can dip your feet in the cool water while you eat.
Menus usually feature trout, grilled meats, gözleme (Turkish flatbread), mantı (Turkish dumplings) and traditional village breakfast. Trout is one of the region's best-known dishes and is served pan-fried or grilled at most places. With a fresh salad, ayran and tea on the side, it makes a simple but satisfying meal.
Prices and quality can vary between restaurants. Check the menu and prices before you sit down, and for items sold by weight, such as fish, ask how much you'll pay before ordering to avoid surprises. On busy days, especially if you're going with a large group, calling ahead to book a table makes things much easier.
Dim Cave: A cool underground world right next to the Dim River
The perfect way to round off a Dim River trip is a visit to Dim Cave, set on a hillside overlooking the valley. Located about 11 kilometers from Alanya center at the foot of Mount Cebireis, the cave offers a lovely view from its entrance over the Dim River valley all the way to the sea in the distance.
About 360 meters long, the cave can be explored along walkways and lighting set up for visitors. Inside, you'll see fascinating formations created by stalactites and stalagmites, and a small lake awaits you at the end. The temperature inside stays at around 18 to 19 degrees Celsius all year, so you'll feel instantly refreshed the moment you step in from the summer heat.
A visit usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. Because it's humid inside, the floor can be slippery in places, so wearing shoes with non-slip soles is important. There are stairs and sloping sections, which visitors with limited mobility should keep in mind. On your way out, don't forget to enjoy the view from the cave's terrace.
Swimming safety and practical tips
The water of the Dim River is quite cold, even in summer. Instead of plunging straight in, wet your feet and arms first to let your body adjust. Avoid jumping into the cold water suddenly, especially right after eating or after spending a long time in the sun.
In some parts of the river the current can be stronger than expected, and the rocks may be mossy and slippery. Children should always be supervised, and the shallow, calm sections of the venues are the best choice for little ones. Non-swimmers should stay away from deeper spots.
What to bring is simple: a swimsuit or a change of clothes, a small towel, water shoes, sunscreen and a hat. Water shoes protect your feet on slippery and sharp rocks. If you plan to use your phone near the water, a waterproof case comes in handy. Since cash may be needed at some points on the way to the valley, it's also useful to carry some cash. Finally, please take your rubbish with you to help keep nature clean.
Sample half-day itinerary for the Dim River and Dim Cave
To make the most of your day, we recommend visiting Dim Cave first thing in the morning. The cave can get busy as the day goes on, and if you go before noon you'll enjoy a quieter visit and the cool air on the scenic terrace.
After the cave, take a short drive down to the Dim River valley. Have lunch in a riverside pavilion, then spend a few hours relaxing in the shade and cooling off in the water. Sipping tea at a leisurely pace after your meal is an essential part of the Dim River experience.
In the afternoon, once the sun starts to lose its strength, you can head back to Alanya. This plan also leaves you time to rest at your hotel in the early evening or watch the sunset on the beach. If you want a longer day, you can add the village roads and viewpoints further up the valley to your route. For families, this itinerary is a great way to introduce children to nature without tiring them out, adding a pleasant change of pace to a beach holiday.
