Cleopatra Beach Alanya Guide: When to Go, How to Get There and Tips for the Perfect Beach Day

A practical guide to Cleopatra Beach in Alanya: getting there, best season and times, the sea, Damlatas Cave, water sports and how to avoid the crowds.

Golden sand and turquoise sea at Cleopatra Beach in Alanya with Alanya Castle rising in the background

Why is Cleopatra Beach in Alanya so famous?

Cleopatra Beach in Alanya starts on the western side of the peninsula crowned by the castle and stretches for just over two kilometres. It is best known for its fine, golden sand. Most visitors to Alanya spend at least one day of their holiday here, both because it is so close to the town centre and because the sea is clear, clean and calm.

According to legend, the beach takes its name from the Egyptian queen Cleopatra. The story goes that the Roman general Mark Antony gave this stretch of coast to Cleopatra as a gift, and the queen swam here herself. While the historical accuracy is debated, the legend has become part of the beach's identity.

Cleopatra Beach has held Blue Flag status for many years, which means certain standards of water quality, cleanliness and safety are maintained. With Alanya Castle and the Taurus Mountains rising behind it, the view alone is reason enough to visit.

How to get to Cleopatra Beach

The biggest advantage of Cleopatra Beach is its location. From Alanya town centre and the harbour, you can walk to the eastern end of the beach in about 10 to 20 minutes. The area around Damlatas Cave is considered the starting point of the beach, and from here a promenade runs west along the shore.

If you are staying in town, public transport is a convenient option. Municipal buses and dolmus minibuses run along the main roads parallel to the beach and stop close to different sections of it. The most reliable way to check current routes is to ask at your hotel reception or look at the signs at the bus stops.

If you are coming by car, keep in mind that parking can be hard to find in summer. There are paid car parks near the beach, but they tend to fill up around midday. If you are staying in Mahmutlar, Oba or Konakli, public transport or a taxi is usually the less stressful choice. Cycling or riding an e-scooter along the coastal road is also a pleasant alternative, especially in the late afternoon.

Sea and sand: who is the beach suitable for?

The sand at Cleopatra Beach is fine and soft, making it very comfortable for anyone who isn't used to pebble beaches. The entry into the sea is sandy at most points, and the depth increases gradually over the first few metres. Bear in mind, however, that the water gets deeper a little further out. If you are visiting with children who can't swim, keep them in sight at all times.

The water is usually clear and turquoise. On windy days, especially in the afternoon, the waves can get bigger. On days like these, pay attention to the lifeguard towers and flag signals: if the red flag is flying, do not go into the water.

In midsummer the sand gets very hot around midday, so bring flip-flops or water shoes. Shade is limited, so renting a parasol or bringing your own is a smart idea. For families with babies, the morning hours are the best time to go, when it is cooler and the sun is gentler.

Best time to visit Cleopatra Beach in Alanya

The swimming season at Cleopatra Beach in Alanya usually starts in May and lasts until the end of October. June and September are the most balanced months, when the sea is pleasantly warm but the heat and the crowds have not yet peaked. July and August are very hot and humid, the sea is bath-warm, and the beach is at its busiest.

Timing during the day also makes a big difference. Early in the morning the beach is quiet, the sea is usually calm and sun loungers are easy to find. Midday is both the hottest and the busiest time, so it makes sense to rest in the shade or take a break at one of the nearby cafés.

Late afternoon is one of the most beautiful times at Cleopatra Beach. Because the beach faces west, the sky turns orange and pink as the sun sinks towards the sea. If you want to watch the sunset from the sand, a second swim in the evening is a great plan.

Right next to the beach: Damlatas Cave

At the eastern end of Cleopatra Beach, just a few steps from the sand, lies Damlatas Cave. Discovered by chance in 1948 during quarrying work, the cave is one of Alanya's most visited natural attractions, with stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years.

The air inside the cave stays cool and humid all year round. Locals believe it is good for the respiratory system, and for many years the cave has been known as a place visited by people with asthma. If you have any medical expectations, we recommend consulting your doctor first.

A visit is short; exploring the cave at a relaxed pace usually takes no more than half an hour. That makes it an ideal break in the middle of a beach day to escape the midday heat. The floor inside can be wet and slippery, so non-slip shoes are safer than flip-flops. Entrance fees and opening hours can change seasonally, so check the latest information before you go.

Water sports, sun loungers and practical beach tips

Cleopatra Beach is not just for sunbathing; it is also great for an active day. Throughout the season, operators at various points along the beach offer parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat rides and other water sports. Before taking part, make sure you are given a life jacket and a safety briefing, and ask whether the operator is licensed.

Part of the beach is public and free, so you can simply lay down your towel and relax. In other sections, beach businesses rent out sun loungers and parasols. On busy days, arriving early is the easiest way to get a good spot. Basic facilities such as showers, changing cabins and toilets are available along the shore.

Don't forget high-factor sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and plenty of water. Never leave valuables unattended on the beach, and if possible use a small waterproof bag. Along the road running parallel to the beach you will easily find restaurants, cafés and supermarkets, so all your needs are covered throughout the day.

Combining Cleopatra Beach with a boat trip

One of the best ways to make the most of a beach day in Alanya is to see Cleopatra Beach from the water as well. Boat trips departing from the harbour usually circle the castle peninsula, making short stops at spots such as the Phosphorus Cave, the Lovers' Cave and the Pirates' Cave. Many trips also stop off Cleopatra Beach for a swim.

This lets you see the beach and the castle behind it from a completely different angle, and swim in deeper, clearer water than near the shore. Boat trips usually last half a day or a full day, so you can join a morning trip and spend the afternoon on the sand, or the other way around.

When planning, it is worth checking the weather and wind forecast. On a calm day, both the boat trip and the beach are far more enjoyable. In the busy months, booking your boat trip in advance makes it easier to get a place on the day and time you want.
