Scuba Diving in Alanya: First Dive Experience, Dive Sites and the Best Season
A guide to scuba diving in Alanya: try dives for beginners, certification courses, dive sites around the castle, the best season and essential safety tips.

Why is scuba diving in Alanya so popular?
Scuba diving in Alanya is one of the activities people ask about most when they want more from their holiday than lying on the beach. There are a few reasons for this. First, the water along this stretch of the Mediterranean coast is usually very clear, and on calm days visibility can easily exceed 20 metres. Second, most dive sites are very close to the harbour. After a short boat ride you reach the rocks, caves and reef-like areas at the foot of the castle peninsula.
The third reason is that Alanya suits both curious beginners who have never dived and experienced divers. Someone who has never worn a mask can take their first breath underwater in a shallow bay with an instructor, while certified divers can head for deeper wall dives and cave entrances. In short, Alanya is a great place to add a half-day adventure to your holiday. In this guide you will find everything from your first dive and choosing the right season to health requirements and what to keep in mind.
Try dive: what happens on your first dive without a certificate?
If you have never dived before, you will usually start with an introductory programme known as a try dive or discover scuba dive. No certificate is required. At the dive centre or on the boat, your instructor first gives a short briefing: how the equipment works, how to equalise the pressure in your ears, how to communicate underwater with hand signals and what to do if water gets into your mask.
You then enter the water in a shallow, calm spot and first get used to breathing at the surface. Once you feel comfortable, your instructor slowly takes you down, either one-to-one or in a very small group. Under international standards, the depth on try dives is limited and usually does not exceed 12 metres. Time underwater is typically around half an hour.
A minimum age usually applies to try dives, so if you are travelling with children, check the limit with the dive centre in advance. Being able to swim is recommended, but you do not need to be a strong swimmer. What matters most is staying calm and following your instructor's directions.
Course options if you want to get certified
If you enjoyed diving and can set aside a few days of your holiday, you can earn an internationally recognised entry-level certification in Alanya. The most common beginner courses qualify you to dive with a buddy, without an instructor, down to a set depth. These courses usually certify you to 18 metres and typically take three to four days to complete.
A course generally has three parts: theory (with some training agencies this can be completed online before your trip), pool or confined water sessions, and open water dives. If you finish the theory at home, you will spend more of your holiday in the sea.
If you are already certified, remember to bring your logbook and certification card (or digital record). If it has been a while since your last dive, asking for a refresher dive on the first day is a good idea for both your safety and your enjoyment. When choosing a dive centre, do not hesitate to ask about the instructors' qualifications, how the equipment is maintained and how large the groups are.
Alanya's top dive sites
Most of Alanya's dive sites are clustered around the castle peninsula. The rocky slopes that plunge steeply into the sea continue underwater, creating interesting formations for wall diving. Some of the caves along this coastline have entrances below or right at the waterline; the areas around the Phosphorus Cave and the Lovers' Cave, also well known from boat trips, are among the spots divers visit most often.
In the shallower areas you will often see octopuses hiding among the rocks, schools of small fish, starfish and colourful parrotfish. A little deeper you may come across large rock-dwelling fish such as the dusky grouper. On a lucky day, a sea turtle might even glide past you.
You may also encounter lionfish, which have become increasingly common in the Mediterranean in recent years. They look spectacular, but their fin spines are venomous, so do not touch them, just as you should not touch any marine life. The dive leader chooses the site based on the day's wind and waves, so no specific spot can be guaranteed.
The best season for diving in Alanya
The diving season in Alanya generally runs from mid-spring to late autumn. In April and May the sea is still cool, with water temperatures usually around 20°C, so you will need a thicker wetsuit. On the other hand, boats are quieter at this time and visibility is often excellent.
June to September is the warmest period. In midsummer the surface water can reach 27 to 29°C, and a thin wetsuit is enough. These are also the busiest months, though, so it is a good idea to book early and choose morning dives where possible.
October and November are favourites among many experienced divers. The sea holds on to the warmth it built up over the summer, the weather becomes milder and the crowds thin out. In winter the water temperature drops to 16 to 18°C; some centres stay open, but the schedule depends much more on the weather. Whatever month you visit, allow for the possibility that dives may be postponed on windy days.
Health, safety and what to know before flying
Before diving, you will be asked to fill in a short medical questionnaire. If you have heart or circulatory conditions, asthma, epilepsy, recent surgery, are pregnant or have chronic ear or sinus problems, you may need to consult a doctor before diving. Answering the form honestly is for your own safety.
Do not dive with a cold or a blocked nose; being unable to equalise can cause severe ear pain. Going easy on alcohol the night before, drinking plenty of water and having a light breakfast will help you feel better throughout the day.
The most commonly overlooked issue is flying after diving. According to international diving guidelines, you should wait at least 12 hours before flying after a single dive, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives or diving on consecutive days. So plan your dive for the first days of your holiday rather than the day before your flight home. Choose your sunscreen carefully too, and where possible opt for reef-safe products that are less harmful to coral and marine life.
Preparing for dive day: what should you bring?
All diving equipment is usually provided by the dive centre: tank, regulator, BCD, wetsuit, mask and fins. Still, if you have your own mask that fits your face well, bringing it will make you more comfortable. If you wear prescription glasses, ask in advance whether the centre offers prescription masks.
Pack swimwear, a towel, a dry change of clothes, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. Since you may spend several hours on the boat, a bottle of water and some small snacks will come in handy. If you are prone to seasickness, remember to take your medication before boarding.
If you want to take photos underwater, an action camera with a waterproof housing is an ideal choice. On your first dive, however, we recommend enjoying the moment rather than fiddling with a camera; many dive centres offer professional photo and video services anyway. Finally, do not forget your ID and, if you are a certified diver, your certification card.
