Why is paragliding in Alanya so popular?

Paragliding in Alanya has become one of the adventure activities visitors most often add to their holiday plans in recent years. The reason is simple: on this stretch of coast, the Taurus Mountains drop almost straight into the sea, so a short drive of a few kilometres takes you hundreds of metres up, and a few minutes later you are gliding over a turquoise bay.

During the flight you can take in the walls of Alanya Castle, Cleopatra Beach and Keykubat Beach on either side of the peninsula, the harbour and the Red Tower in a single view. On clear days the coastline stretches for kilometres to the east and west, while pine-covered mountains rise behind you.

The best part is that no previous experience is needed. Almost all flights in Alanya are tandem flights, meaning you fly under the same wing as a licensed, experienced pilot. You simply follow a few easy instructions and enjoy the view. That is why it appeals to a very wide audience, from young adrenaline seekers to middle-aged couples trying something like this for the very first time.

Takeoff and landing: where does the flight start and end?

Tandem flights in Alanya usually take off from launch sites in the mountains just behind the town, at around 700 metres. The takeoff point is roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive from central Alanya, and since the road winds up the mountainside, the journey itself is a small scenic tour.

Most operators pick participants up from their hotel and drive them to the launch site. Up there, your pilot introduces you to the equipment, fastens your harness and gives you a short briefing. When the wind is right, you take a few running steps and lift off the ground.

Landings usually take place on a quieter section of Cleopatra Beach set aside for paragliders. This is a big advantage: when the flight is over, you are right on the beach and can spend the rest of the day swimming or relaxing in one of the beach cafés. Takeoff and landing spots can change depending on wind direction and weather, so it is best to confirm the details when you book.

How long does the flight last and what is it like in the air?

Depending on the weather, a tandem flight usually lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. However, the whole experience, from hotel pickup to landing on the beach, including waiting time and preparation at the launch site, can take a few hours. It is wise not to pack your schedule for that day.

For most people, the first few seconds after takeoff are the most thrilling part. Then a calm glide begins as the wind carries you along, and many participants say the experience was far more peaceful than they expected. Your pilot will change direction from time to time to show you different views.

If you want more adrenaline, you can ask the pilot for acrobatic manoeuvres such as turns and spirals. If you have a sensitive stomach, mention it at the start and ask for a smooth flight. Pilots usually shape the flight around their passenger's comfort. Your arms are free during the flight, so you can take photos, wave or simply enjoy the scenery. As you approach the landing, the pilot will tell you how to hold your legs, and the landing is usually very gentle.

Best season and time of day for paragliding in Alanya

Thanks to Alanya's climate, paragliding is possible for most of the year. The main season runs from April to November, but flights can also go ahead in winter on clear days with suitable wind. What really matters is not the season but the wind, visibility and rain on the day itself.

Spring, especially April and May, is one of the most enjoyable periods, with mild weather and crystal-clear views. The mountains are lush and green and the sea sparkles. July and August can be very hot, so morning or late afternoon flights are more comfortable. September, October and November are ideal: the sea is still warm, the crowds thin out and the light softens.

The most popular time of day is just before sunset. In the golden light, the castle and the sea look unforgettable, and the photos turn out even more impressive. Because these slots are in high demand, they can be harder to get. In bad weather, flights are cancelled or postponed for safety reasons, so booking in the first days of your holiday gives you more flexibility.

Who can fly? Weight, age and health requirements

Tandem paragliding is not physically demanding, but there are a few basic requirements. You need to be able to take a few running steps at takeoff and stay on your feet when landing. Age and weight limits vary by operator and pilot, so be sure to ask before booking. Children can usually take part above a certain age and weight, with parental consent.

Anyone with heart problems, high blood pressure, epilepsy, recent surgery or serious back or knee issues should consult a doctor before flying. Paragliding is not recommended during pregnancy. Interestingly, many people with a fear of heights end up loving the flight, because the feeling of gliding is very different from looking down from the top of a building.

Before your flight, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, and if you are prone to nausea, stick to a light breakfast. Be honest: telling your pilot openly about your health and any concerns is the most important step for both your safety and an enjoyable flight.

What to wear and what to bring

Choosing the right clothes directly affects your comfort. Footwear matters most: wear trainers or comfortable shoes that support your ankles. Flip-flops, sandals and heels can cause problems during the takeoff run and may fall off in the air.

Because the launch site is high above sea level, it can be cooler and windier than down below, even in summer. Bring a light windbreaker or cardigan, especially in spring, autumn and winter. If you have long hair, don't forget a hair tie.

You can wear sunglasses, but a strap to keep them in place is useful. If you want to use your phone during the flight, a lanyard or secure case is a must. It is best to leave loose items from your pockets and hats on the ground. Since you will land on the beach, pack swimwear, a towel and sunscreen too, as a swim after the flight rounds off the experience perfectly.

Photos, videos and choosing a safe operator

Most tandem pilots record the entire flight with an action camera mounted on the wingtip or on a pole in their hand. These photos and videos are usually offered as a separate service, so ask about the recording option and how the footage will be delivered when you book. Footage from sunset flights is especially stunning.

When choosing an operator, put reliability ahead of the cheapest offer. Licensed and experienced pilots, regularly maintained equipment, insured passengers and a willingness to postpone the flight in unsuitable weather should be the key criteria. Booking through a trusted agency, your hotel or companies with publicly visible reviews, rather than street touts, is the easiest way to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Also check in advance whether transfers are included, what happens if the flight is cancelled and how you will get back to your hotel from the landing spot. These small questions help make sure your big day goes smoothly.
