Is a budget holiday in Alanya really possible?

Alanya is one of the most visited holiday destinations on the Mediterranean coast, so many people assume a trip here will be expensive. In reality, with the right planning, doing Alanya on a budget is surprisingly easy. One of the best things about the town is that many of its most-loved experiences are either free or very cheap. You don't need a big budget to enjoy the long public beaches, the narrow streets of the old town, the promenade along the harbour or the scenic path winding up to the castle.

What really determines your spending is when you travel, where you stay, how you get around town and where you eat. In this guide we look at each of these four areas one by one. Our aim is to help you cut unnecessary costs without sacrificing the fun of your holiday, so you can put the money you save towards truly memorable experiences such as a boat trip or a nature excursion. Even small habits can make a noticeable difference to the total cost of a week away.

Choosing the right time: The early and late season advantage

Nothing affects prices in Alanya more than the calendar. July and August are the busiest months. With schools on holiday, the number of both Turkish and international visitors peaks, and this feeds straight into hotel and flight prices. If you want to protect your budget, look at late April to mid-June or mid-September to late October.

During these periods the sea is usually warm enough for swimming, the weather is pleasantly warm rather than scorching, and many hotels and guesthouses offer more flexible rates. Restaurants and tour spots are also quieter, so you'll get served without the wait. Flying out and back on weekdays can also make a difference to airfares. Turkish religious holidays and long weekends, on the other hand, bring sudden surges of domestic tourists, so keep those dates flexible if you can. If you have some wiggle room with your dates, comparing a few different weeks is the simplest way to find the cheapest time to go.

Saving on accommodation: Choosing the right area and type of stay

Alanya stretches along a long coastline from Gazipaşa to Avsallar, and prices vary from area to area. Hotels within walking distance of the centre and Cleopatra Beach are convenient but can be pricier in high season. Areas such as Mahmutlar, Kestel and Tosmur, meanwhile, offer a wider range of apart-hotels and holiday apartments.

A self-catering apartment with a kitchen can take a lot of pressure off the budget, especially for families and longer stays. Making your own breakfast and some dinners is far cheaper than eating out for every meal. All-inclusive hotels may look expensive at first glance, but if you plan to spend most of the day at the hotel they can work out well overall. The key is to match your choice to your travel style. If you plan to explore a lot, a bed-and-breakfast option close to the centre or the main road is the more economical choice. Before booking, always check how far the hotel is from the nearest bus stop.

Getting around town: Local buses and walking instead of taxis

Taxis are one of the expenses that quietly eat into your budget in Alanya. Taking a taxi even for short hops can add up to a surprising total over a week. Yet the town's public transport network is very handy. Municipal buses run along the main coastal road, connecting areas such as Mahmutlar, Kestel, Oba, Cikcilli and Konaklı with the centre. Routes and payment methods change from time to time, so it's best to check the latest information with your hotel reception or on the boards at the bus stops.

If you're staying in the centre, you can reach many places on foot. Cleopatra Beach, the area around Damlataş Cave, the harbour and the Red Tower are all close to one another. The walking and cycling paths along the seafront are also lovely for an evening stroll once it cools down. In some parts of town you'll find shared bikes and e-scooters too. If you're a larger group heading to one distant spot, splitting a taxi fare per person can end up comparable to the bus, so factor that in as well.

Free and low-cost things to do in Alanya

Some of Alanya's best experiences won't cost you a thing. At public beaches such as Cleopatra Beach and East Beach you can enjoy the sea all day with your own towel and umbrella; renting a sun lounger is optional. The seafront walk starting at the harbour and passing the Red Tower is one of the most enjoyable moments in town, especially at sunset.

You can walk most of the way up to the castle. Along the route you'll pass old Ottoman houses, cobbled lanes and views over the bay; only certain sections, such as the Inner Citadel (İç Kale), charge an entry fee. Wandering the narrow streets of the old town, browsing the local markets and relaxing in the seaside parks are also free. The neighbourhood markets held on set days of the week are a great chance to buy fresh fruit and see local life up close; just ask where you're staying which market runs on which day. For paid museums and archaeological sites, check in advance whether a pass like the Müzekart museum card would save you money.

Smart choices for eating and drinking

Seafront restaurants with a view are lovely, but eating every meal there will quickly stretch your budget. A few streets inland, the eateries where locals eat, pide bakeries and traditional workers' canteens (esnaf lokantası) are not only cheaper but often tastier too. Where prices aren't listed on the menu, don't hesitate to ask before ordering; this avoids surprises, especially with fish and other dishes sold by weight.

Having breakfast at your hotel or apartment keeps you full for much of the day. Taking fruit, water and a sandwich to the beach instead of buying pricey snacks at lunchtime noticeably lowers your daily spending. Buying Alanya's local produce, such as bananas and citrus fruit, at markets and greengrocers is both cheaper and much fresher. Drinks are another hidden cost. Keeping a large bottle of water in your room and refilling from it is far cheaper and greener than paying for small bottles all day.

Budgeting for tours: What's worth spending money on?

Saving money doesn't mean giving up every paid activity. The real goal is to put your money towards the experiences that add the most value. In Alanya, boat trips, nature excursions into the Taurus Mountains and day trips to nearby towns are experiences that are hard or more expensive to organise on your own. A boat trip lets you see several caves and coves in one go, while nature tours bundle transport, a guide and often lunch into a single package.

When choosing a tour, always ask what the price includes. Are hotel pick-up and drop-off, meals, entrance fees and equipment included? A tour that looks cheap can end up expensive once extra charges are added. Deciding in advance which tours you want to join and planning your budget around them cuts down on last-minute spending. Booking several tours with the same company can sometimes get you a better deal, so it's worth asking when you book.
