Family with children enjoying the sea on a shallow sandy beach in Alanya

Why is Alanya an ideal destination for families with kids?

Many people planning a family holiday in Alanya with kids ask the same question: can a holiday with little ones be both relaxing and fun? The answer is largely yes. With long sandy beaches, sunshine for most of the year and attractions grouped within short distances, Alanya makes life easy for families.

Because the town centre is fairly compact, you will not need long journeys between the beach, the harbour, the bazaar and restaurants. The seafront promenades are well suited to strolling with a pushchair, and in the evenings the coastline takes on a lively yet safe atmosphere for families.

There is plenty of choice when it comes to accommodation too. The centre offers apartment hotels and city hotels, while areas such as Konaklı, Avsallar, Okurcalar and Mahmutlar are known for resorts with kids clubs, pools and water slides. Deciding whether to stay in the centre or in a quieter coastal town, based on your children's ages and your family's travel style, is the first step that shapes the rest of your holiday.

The best time to visit Alanya with kids

Alanya's summer season is long, but not every month is equally comfortable for families with children. In July and August, midday temperatures often climb above 35°C, and with the added humidity this can be tiring for young kids.

That is why many families prefer late May, June and September. During these months the sea is warm enough for swimming, the weather is more bearable and the beaches are a little quieter than in the peak weeks. September in particular is one of the best months for swimming, as the sea has been warming up all summer long.

If school holidays mean you have to travel in July or August, planning your day around the heat makes things much easier. Head to the beach early in the morning, rest at the hotel or in the shade during the midday heat, go back in the water in the late afternoon and take a walk along the seafront after dinner. It is the most practical way to keep children energised and happy.

The best shallow, sandy beaches for kids

When choosing a beach for a family holiday in Alanya, the most important things to look at are how gradually the sea gets deeper and what the sand is like.

Keykubat Beach, stretching east of the town centre, is a practical choice for families thanks to its wide sandy shore and the cafés and restaurants lining the coast. Being within walking distance of the centre means everything you need is close at hand.

About 20 kilometres west of the centre, İncekum Beach is a favourite with families with young children, thanks to the fine sand it is named after and its gently shelving water. The surrounding pine trees are an added bonus for anyone looking for shade.

The small Damlataş Beach right next to Damlataş Cave is also ideal for a quick swim if you are staying in the centre. Whichever beach you choose, remember that waves can pick up on windy days. Always keep children in sight and, where possible, choose areas with lifeguards.

Damlataş Cave: a short but impressive adventure

Damlataş Cave sits in the centre of Alanya, at the start of the road to Cleopatra Beach, and is one of the easiest outings to do with kids. With stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years, the cave offers little ones a real sense of discovery.

Since the visit is short, there is little risk of boredom; half an hour to an hour is usually enough to explore it comfortably. The temperature inside stays fairly constant all year round and humidity is high. Locals often say the cave air is good for the respiratory system, but if your child has health issues, it is best to consult your doctor first.

The steps down into the cave can be slippery due to the humidity, so wear non-slip shoes and hold small children by the hand. A pushchair is not practical inside, so a baby carrier will make things easier. Visiting the cave in the morning and then swimming at the nearby beach makes an ideal half-day plan for hot summer days.

Pirate boat trip and family-friendly sea activities

Pirate-themed boat trips departing from Alanya harbour are often one of the highlights children remember most. The colourful boats sail past spots such as the Phosphorescent Cave and the Lovers' Cave at the foot of the castle, usually stopping in coves for swimming breaks.

Trips generally last half a day or a full day, and may include lunch, music and entertainment on board. If you are travelling with young children, it is worth asking in advance about the trip length, whether there is a shaded area on deck and whether children's life jackets are available.

For kids prone to seasickness, choosing a larger, more stable boat and setting off after a light breakfast rather than a heavy meal can help. Make sure your bag includes sunscreen, a hat, a change of clothes and a towel. For older children, snorkelling, pedal boats and water sports close to shore are safe and fun alternatives when supervised.

Water parks, seaside walks and evening activities

Beyond the sea, Alanya has other options to keep kids happy. The water parks in and around town, with their slides and children's pools, make a great half-day alternative, especially on hot summer days. Since ticket prices and opening days can vary by season, we recommend checking the latest information before you go.

In the late afternoon, the promenades along Keykubat and Cleopatra beaches become a meeting point for families, with playgrounds and ice cream shops along the way. The harbour area is also lively in the evenings; children enjoy watching the boats come and go while adults relax with a drink and a sea view.

Local markets can be a fascinating experience for children as well. Tasting seasonal fruit, wandering among colourful stalls and picking out small souvenirs often become some of the fondest holiday memories. Rather than cramming too many activities into one day, plan one main activity per day so that both the children and you stay well rested.

Practical tips on heat, food and health

A few simple precautions are all it takes to make sure nothing spoils your family holiday in Alanya with kids. The most important is protection from the sun and heat. Reapply high-SPF sunscreen frequently throughout the day, especially after swimming. A wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective swimwear and sunglasses make a big difference for little ones.

Children do not always notice when they are thirsty in the heat, so always carry water and make sure they drink at regular intervals. Sealed bottled water is the safest choice. When it comes to food, Turkish cuisine is very child-friendly: köfte meatballs, pide, lentil soup, rice and fresh fruit are favourites with most kids.

Pack a small first aid kit with fever reducer, plasters, insect repellent and any medication your child takes regularly. Alanya has both a state hospital and private hospitals, and many hotels offer access to a doctor. Make sure your travel health insurance covers your children as well.
