Alanya Boat Trip Guide: Caves, Hidden Bays and Tips for Choosing the Right Boat
Everything to know before an Alanya boat trip: the route, sea caves, swimming stops, boat types, the best season and tips to avoid seasickness on board.

Why an Alanya Boat Trip Is a Holiday Must
Exploring Alanya on land is lovely, but to see the city's true skyline you need to head out to sea. An Alanya boat trip is the easiest way to see the steep cliffs of the castle peninsula, the sea-level caves and coves that are hard to reach by land, all in a single day. And because it involves no hiking, stairs or long drives, it suits travellers of all ages.
Most tours depart from the harbour in the city centre, right next to the Red Tower (Kızıl Kule). The boat first cruises around the peninsula, then stops for swims in crystal-clear bays. Throughout the day you can take photos from the deck, jump into the sea or simply lie back in the shade and enjoy the view.
In this guide you'll find out what you'll see on an Alanya boat trip, which type of boat suits you best, when to go and the small details that make for a hassle-free day. Our goal is to answer every question you might have before you book.
The Classic Route: From the Harbour Around the Castle Peninsula
Most Alanya boat tours follow a similar route. Shortly after leaving the harbour, you'll see the Red Tower and the Seljuk-era Shipyard (Tersane) from the water. Carved into the rock with its arched bays, the Shipyard is far more impressive from the sea than from land and offers one of the best photo angles of the trip.
The boat then heads towards the southern tip of the peninsula. Here the castle walls rise above almost vertical cliffs, and looking up from below you really appreciate how challenging the site was to build on. At the foot of these cliffs lie the caves, some of the most popular stops on any tour.
As you round the western side of the peninsula, the area around Damlataş Cave and the long sandy stretch of Cleopatra Beach come into view. Some tours stop for a swim near the beach here. The route may then continue to quiet bays to the west or east. Since the itinerary can vary depending on the operator, weather and sea conditions, we recommend asking which stops are included when you book.
Sea Caves: Phosphorescent Cave, Lovers' Cave and Pirates' Cave
One of the highlights of an Alanya boat trip is the caves hidden in the cliffs of the peninsula. They are almost impossible to reach from land and can only be approached by boat.
The Phosphorescent Cave is known for its water, which glows in shades of green and turquoise thanks to the way light reflects beneath the surface. When the sea is calm, boats get quite close to the cave entrance, and some tours offer a swim nearby. The light is usually at its best around midday, when the sun is high.
The Lovers' Cave sits in a small cove among the rocks and is famous for the romantic stories told about it. The Pirates' Cave is said to have been a hideout for pirates in the past; guides usually share these legends on board.
Keep in mind that whether boats enter the caves depends entirely on sea conditions. On rough days, captains may pass at a distance for safety reasons. Rather than a shortcoming, this should be seen as the right call from an experienced crew.
Which Boat Is Right for You? Family, Party and Private Boat Options
Alanya harbour is home to a wide variety of boats, and choosing the right one directly affects how much you enjoy your day.
The large pirate-themed boats usually have a lively atmosphere. With music, foam parties and entertainment, they are ideal for young people and groups looking for fun. However, they can be noisy for those seeking peace and quiet or for families with small children.
Classic family-friendly tour boats follow a more relaxed programme. The music is quieter, swimming stops are longer and there is plenty of shade. For families with children and anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery in peace, this is the most balanced choice.
A private boat or yacht charter suits those who want full control over the route and timing. Honeymooners, large families or anyone planning a special celebration often choose this option.
Before booking, always ask how many passengers the boat carries, how much shade there is, whether lunch is included and whether hotel transfers are provided.
Best Season and the Right Time of Day
The Alanya boat trip season usually runs from late April to late October, and into early November when the weather allows. In May and June the sea has started to warm up, the crowds haven't peaked yet and conditions on deck are very comfortable.
July and August are the busiest and hottest months. The water is perfect for swimming, but the midday sun can be very strong. During this period it's important to choose a boat with plenty of shade and to book early.
September and October are considered by many travellers to be the ideal time for a boat trip. The sea is still warm after the summer, the weather is milder and the harbour is less crowded.
Day trips usually leave in the late morning and return in the afternoon, typically lasting around five to six hours in total. Sunset cruises are shorter and give you the chance to watch the sun go down behind the castle skyline from the sea. Bear in mind that the programme may change on windy days.
Practical Tips for Seasickness and Sun Protection
The Alanya coast is generally calm in summer, but the wind can pick up in the afternoon, bringing a light swell. If you're prone to seasickness, sitting in the middle of the boat and, if possible, on the lower deck will help you feel the motion less. Looking at the horizon and avoiding staring at your phone screen for long periods also helps.
Avoid a heavy, greasy breakfast before the trip, but don't set off on an empty stomach either. A light meal is best. If needed, ask your pharmacist in advance about a seasickness remedy.
The sun is stronger at sea than on land because of reflection off the water. High-factor sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses are essential. Don't forget to reapply sunscreen after each swim.
Remember to drink plenty of water, as spending long hours in the sun on a hot day quickly tires you out. Keeping valuables in a waterproof pouch or small bag is the easiest way to keep your phone safe, especially when jumping into the sea.
Boat Trips with Children and Non-Swimmers
An Alanya boat trip can be a great day out for families with children too, as long as you keep a few things in mind. First, ask whether child-sized life jackets are available on board. Reputable operators are well prepared, but it's always good to double-check.
If you're travelling with young children, it's best to avoid party boats and choose a quieter family boat instead. Loud music and crowds can quickly become tiring for little ones. Having a shaded area where they can sit for long periods is also important.
Adults who can't swim can still enjoy the trip with ease. Swimming stops are optional; you can enter the water in shallow, calm spots wearing a life jacket or simply stay on deck and take in the view. Some boats have a ladder and a swim platform, making it easier to get in and out of the water.
Packing a change of clothes, a towel and some small snacks for the children will make the day much more comfortable.
